What is Decommissioning?

Building Decommissioning can be defined as the processes involved in a scheduled shut-down or ceasing of operations of Industrial, Commercial or Institutional facilities or leaseholds.  It is the process of bringing a building back to its original state, by removing any improvements added during its occupation.  This includes retiring any and all mechanical or facility equipment, restoring the land and water to a clean and safe condition, and removal of all excess material and wastes.

The process of decommissioning is taken on normally when a business elects to move its operations out of a leased or owned building with the intention of sale or release of the existing building.

Preparation of a Decommissioning Plan (DMP) will set out a methodology for completion and itemize materials designated as hazardous, recyclable/re-usable, or unsalvageable and garbage.  DMP application submittals to the Ministry of the Environment is MANDATED by the Ontario Government for any decommissioning projects on sites that require an REA (renewable energy approval)
